Sol'Ex & Star'Ex Pro — Official Mechanical Kit

Christian Buil's open-source spectral imaging instrument in a Carbon PETG chassis with Aluminum M42 threads

Engineered according to the pioneering designs of Christian Buil, the Sol'Ex Pro (Solar Explorer) and its stellar variant Star'Ex Pro (Star Explorer) have revolutionized amateur spectroscopy. Crafted and assembled in France by Azur3dprint, this Pro mechanical assembly provides a rigid, thermally stable platform built to house your optical set (available separately via Shelyak Instruments).

⚙️ Select your configuration from the drop-down menu:

☀️ Sol'Ex Pro

Base chassis configuration dedicated to high-resolution solar scanning spectroheliography (Hα, Ca II K, Helium lines, etc.).

✨ Star'Ex Pro HR

Includes Sol'Ex Pro chassis + Star'Ex autoguiding module + High Resolution (HR) stiffener for stellar line analysis.

🌌 Star'Ex Pro LR

Includes Sol'Ex Pro chassis + Star'Ex autoguiding module + Low Resolution (LR) stiffener for spectral classification of faint targets.

Key Upgrades of the Azur3dprint "PRO" Version

Field-refined to outperform standard 3D prints in rigidity, durability, and optical stray-light suppression:

  • Carbon-Fiber Reinforced PETG Chassis: Outstanding torsional rigidity and thermal resistance under intense direct solar exposure.
  • Machined Aluminum M42 Threads: Heavy-duty, wear-free metal interfaces for telescope nosepieces and camera connections.
  • Internal Anti-Reflection Light Traps: Specialized textured internal surfaces suppress stray reflections to maximize spectral contrast.
  • Gen2 Slit Mounts Included by Default: Guarantees strict perpendicular positioning of the micrometric slit.
  • Future-Proof Platform: The Pro edition is the only base platform compatible with upcoming modular mechanical add-ons.
📦 Required Optical Glass Set (Not Included):

This kit includes the complete assembled mechanical housing with all fasteners and aluminum M42 threads. It does not contain optical elements (slit, diffraction grating, collimating lenses). The official optical glass kit is supplied directly by Shelyak Instruments.

☀️ Storage & Thermal Care Advisory:

Carbon PETG delivers excellent thermal stability during outdoor sessions. However, do not store or leave the instrument inside a locked vehicle or sealed under a dark waterproof telescope cover in direct summer sunlight (exceeding 70°C / 158°F).

"The Sol'Ex is a phenomenal collaborative project that made spectroheliography accessible to everyone. Investing in a specialized Carbon PETG chassis pre-fitted with machined aluminum M42 threads saves hours of trial and error, removing mechanical flexure so you can focus entirely on data acquisition."

— Vincent, Founder of Azur3dprint
