Safely mount standard 2" (M48) filters on your ZWO Seestar S50 with this anti-drop retractable system and magnetic dew shield.
Safe retractable mount system, 2" (M48) filter holder, flared magnetic dew shield & dedicated masks
Installing standard 2" narrowband filters (Dual-Band, Optolong L-eNhance/L-Ultimate, Baader, etc.) onto the ZWO Seestar S50 dramatically boosts deep-sky performance under light-polluted skies. However, this setup traditionally came with severe mechanical hazards: during an automated mid-night shutdown (« Park »), rigid third-party mounts collide with the chassis, risking stripped stepper gears or shattering a €150+ glass filter. Other DIY mounts simply drop the filter straight onto hard ground. I designed and engineered this Expert Pack in my Cannes workshop to provide complete, risk-free nocturnal autonomy.
🔄 Captive Passive Swing ClearanceAs the motorized arm closes for parking, an angled guide finger gently makes contact with the telescope body, smoothly pivoting the filter baseplate outward on its axis. The entire assembly swings aside while remaining firmly attached: nothing drops, drive motors experience zero drag, and arm overtravel is absorbed at any angle. |
🧲 Embedded Neodymium MagnetsI reject cyanoacrylate glue, which becomes brittle and fails under freezing temperatures and dew. My neodymium magnets are inserted directly into the polymer core during 3D printing: fully sealed, they can never pull out and are completely immune to atmospheric corrosion. |
Optically, adapting an external mechanical filter cell with a standard 2" filter (which features an internal clear glass aperture of roughly 44 mm) marginally stops down the entrance pupil of the 50 mm doublet. This geometric reality applies to any threaded filter adaptation on compact setups, and is heavily outweighed by the massive contrast gains on emission nebulae. In contrast, the magnetic dew shield introduces zero additional vignetting: its interior conical geometry flares to over 55 mm at the rim, preserving the full optical path.
Metal cell thickness differs across astronomical filter brands (6 mm on Baader cells, 5 mm on SVBONY, Optolong, or ZWO cells). To ensure a flush fit without mechanical play or lateral stray light leaks:
💡 The craftsman's word: "Running unattended all-night imaging with a €150+ glass filter requires total confidence in your mechanics. I developed this retractable kinematic system so you can sleep peacefully: at auto-park, the plate swings away smoothly while keeping your gear attached. Built by an astronomer for astronomers, and 3D printed in my Cannes workshop at an honest price of €59.90 for the complete setup."

Optically, adding an external mechanical holder with a standard 2" filter (clear glass aperture ~44 mm) slightly stops down the entrance pupil of the 50 mm doublet. This geometric rule applies to any threaded filter setup on the Seestar. However, the magnetic dew shield is calculated with a flared geometry opening past 55 mm at the front rim: it adds zero extra vignetting or light reduction.
The system was engineered specifically for this scenario. The contoured guide finger contacts the telescope body as the arm swings downward. Through smooth passive mechanical leverage, it pivots the entire plate outward. The arm returns to park position without motor friction, keeping your expensive optical filters suspended safely above the ground.
Cyanoacrylate glue turns brittle and fails under nocturnal frost and heavy dew, causing glued magnets to pop loose after several weeks in the field. By embedding magnets directly inside the part during 3D printing, they remain shielded from atmospheric moisture and can physically never pull free.
No. The Seestar S50 Pro features a different housing incorporating a secondary wide-angle camera. This pack is engineered exclusively for the original Seestar S50. A dedicated version for the S50 Pro is available separately on the store.
